Furniture Care & Cleaning
The care and cleaning of all furniture offered by eAdirondack Style is quite simple. Each piece is suitable for outdoor use and requires just a few things to keep in mind.
  • The Type of Wood
  • The Climate
  • The Finish

Javanese Teak
Furniture made from Javanese Teak is provided in its natural state. It will appear polished due to the natural oil occuring in the wood. You should wipe your furniture with a damp cloth to remove any dust from manufacturing. The oil on the surface will evaporate after a few days outdoors. It is the oil that remains below the surface that gives the wood its durability. Some of these oils may bleed out following the first few rainfalls, and initially, you will want to bring your cushions in when the furniture is wet. Once the furniture has begun to form the silver-grey patina, it is no longer necessary to bring the cushions indoors.

To clean the furniture without removing the silver-grey patina simply use soap and water. Should you want to maintain the golden brown color, we recommend using our Kingsley-Bate Teak Protector on new pieces and apply seasonally. The teak protector should be applied after cleaning and drying out your furniture.

You may remove the silver-grey patina your teak furniture acquired. If you want to remove the silver-grey color and bring your furniture back to the original golden brown color, we recommend using our Kingsley-Bate Teak Cleaner. This again is only to be used if you want to remove the silver-grey color. After using the teak cleaner, you must use the teak protector seasonally to maintain the golden brown color. It is not necessary to use the cleaner on a new piece of furniture.

We do not recommend painting teak as the wood's natural oils can affect how the paint adheres. Teak has qualities unlike any other wood as it has the ability to withstand the rigors of adverse climates.

Alder
Furniture made from Alder has been painted with a quality high-gloss water-based enamel. It is intended for indoor or outdoor use. Clean up is simple using soap and water. Repainting will require light sanding of the surface after a thorough cleaning and drying.

Northern White Cedar
Furniture made from Northern White Cedar is offered in its natural state and untreated. Water based or oil stains will delay the weathering process. Latex paints coats evenly and lets the wood breath. Clean using soap and water.

Western Red Cedar
Furniture made from Western Red Cedar is provided in a double-dipped oil stain or an oil-based, semi-transparent stain. The furniture should be refinished periodically and at least once annually depending on the exposure to the elements. Cleaning is simple using soap and water.

Southern Cypress
Furniture made from Southern Cypress is provided in both its natural state and in a distressed finish. If you choose to have the product remain natural, you should apply a natural oil-based stain or preservative annually or as needed. If you wish to paint your furniture, you should use an oil-based primer (white or gray) followed by an exterior oil or latex paint of your choice. Cypress is a dense wood and the drying process may take several days depending on humidity and temperature. Small cracks called weather checking may appear in the wood. This is a natural process and will not affect the useful life of the furniture. Clean using soap and water.

Dark Red Meranti Mahogany
Furniture made from Dark Red Meranti Mahogany is provided in its natural state. As with any unfinished wood product, if left untreated, you may notice some checking, surface cracks and raised grain as it ages. This is normal and, to those who desire the weathered look, adds beauty and character. If treatment is desired, we recommend maintenance with a water repellant and UV inhibitor finish to protect the furniture's dimensional stability. This should be applied annually.

Occasionally, after a rainstorm, the wood dust residue remaining on some of the pieces from the manufacturing process can stain stone or concrete patio surfaces. It is recommended that you pre-wash your Mahogany furniture with a mixture of water and 10% bleach before placing it on stone or concrete. If you use your furniture in a shady area, you may see some mildew. If this occurs, use a stiff scrub brush to apply a 10% mixture of bleach and water; then hose down the furniture and place in direct sun to dry thoroughly. After the intial cleaning, you may maintain your furniture with soap and water.

Southern Yellow Pine
Furniture made from Southern Yellow Pine is pressure treated and double kiln-dried to provide all-season outdoor use. The type of finish used is a water-based, exterior latex enamel with a UV protector. Within the initial months, expect to see some loss of paint and some surface cracking. During dry times of the year, expect to see the wood shrink slightly and the need to tighten carriage bolts as the weather changes with the seasons. These changes make each piece unique and while nature matures your furniture, the wood will remain structurally sound for years to come. Maintenance is low and requires just soap and water for cleaning. There is also no need to paint every few years as the furniture is extra finely ground to maximize the adherence to the wood.

EnviroWood

EnviroWood is a synthetic wood substitute closely resembling painted wood. It is permeated with a UV stabilized coloring that eliminates the need for painting, staining, waterproofing, stripping and resurfacing. Outside of cleaning with soap and water, EnviroWood requires no maintenance.
